#63 Down Syndrome

A person with down syndrome has three copies of chromosome number 21. The person has non disjunction, which is where a chromosome does not separate from it's homologue during meiosis. One gamete gets an extra copy of a chromosome and one receives none. Notice in the drawing of the karyotype above that there are three copies of chromosome 21.
